A Cozy Fall & Winter Getaway in Ontario: Escape to Lake Nipissing

4 min read

If you’ve been searching for a cozy fall or winter getaway in Ontario, you might want to look a little farther north.

Just 3.5 hours from Toronto, North Bay is close enough for a weekend road trip, but far enough north that it feels like you’ve actually gone somewhere. Think crisp fall mornings, snow-covered forests, frozen lake views and quiet evenings by the fire — without giving up restaurants, shops and everything else you might want from a city.

And tucked along the sandy shoreline of Lake Nipissing is Finch Beach Resort, a collection of four private cottages designed for exactly this kind of escape.

An Ontario Cottage Getaway That Isn't Just for Summer

There is something completely different about cottage country once summer ends.

At Finch, autumn brings cool mornings along the beach, changing leaves and some spectacular Lake Nipissing sunsets. It's the kind of weekend made for coffee by the water, an afternoon hike and coming home to warm up by the fireplace.

Then winter arrives.

Lake Nipissing freezes, snow settles over the beach and the property becomes wonderfully quiet. Our cottages stay open throughout the winter, giving you a cozy home base for a Northern Ontario winter getaway — whether you plan to spend the weekend outside or barely leave the cottage at all.

Each cottage has its own kitchen, living space and gas fireplace, so you can bring groceries, pour a glass of wine, put on a record or a movie and settle in.

And then there's the sauna.

Our wood-fired barrel sauna sits just steps from the lake, making a cold winter evening at Finch feel a little bit like your own private Nordic retreat.

Explore North Bay's Outdoors

If you want to earn that sauna session, North Bay has plenty of ways to do it.

The city has more than 85 kilometres of hiking trails, and fall is particularly beautiful along the Laurentian Escarpment, at Laurier Woods and around Duchesnay Falls.

Duchesnay is one of our favourite four-season stops. In autumn, the falls are surrounded by changing forest; in winter, snow and ice transform the landscape entirely.

North Bay sits where northern forest meets the deciduous forests of Southern Ontario, which makes fall particularly colourful here. By late fall, the golden tamaracks put on another show after many of the maple leaves have already dropped.

Winter opens up a completely different list of possibilities: cross-country skiing, downhill skiing and snowboarding, snowshoeing, winter hiking, fat biking, skating, snowmobiling and, of course, ice fishing.

Experience Winter on Lake Nipissing

One of the best parts about staying at Finch in winter is right outside your cottage.

Lake Nipissing is enormous — and once winter settles in, the lake becomes part of the landscape in an entirely new way.

Ice fishing huts appear across the frozen lake, snowmobiles make their way along winter routes and the wide-open ice creates some unforgettable northern sunsets.

Lake Nipissing has also become one of Ontario's best-known ice fishing destinations, making Finch a great home base for anyone planning a Lake Nipissing ice fishing trip who would rather end the day in a comfortable cottage with a fireplace and sauna.

Not an angler? That's completely fine.

There is something pretty wonderful about simply watching winter happen from the warm side of the window.

The Best of a Cottage and a City

This might be our favourite thing about Finch.

You can wake up in a cottage on Lake Nipissing, walk onto the beach with your coffee and feel like you're at a Northern Ontario retreat.

But you're still in North Bay.

That means you don't have to pack absolutely everything you'll need for the weekend or drive 45 minutes down a country road when you decide you want dinner out.

Spend the afternoon hiking and then head downtown for dinner. Grab coffee in the morning. Visit a local gallery or shop. Pick up groceries and cook back at the cottage. Or make absolutely no plans at all.

It's a cottage getaway with a little more flexibility.

An Easy Road Trip from Southern Ontario

For guests coming from Toronto and the GTA, North Bay is roughly a 3.5-hour drive north of Toronto.

That makes Finch far enough away to experience a real change of scenery without requiring a flight or a full day of travel.

It's an easy destination for:

  • a romantic Ontario weekend getaway

  • a girls' weekend or friends' trip

  • a cozy winter cottage weekend

  • a fall colours road trip

  • a Lake Nipissing ice fishing getaway

  • a quiet midweek escape

  • or simply a couple of days away from the GTA

Once you arrive, unpack once. The lake, beach and sauna are right outside, and the rest of North Bay is close by.

Sometimes You Just Need to Go North

Summer gets most of the attention in cottage country, but we have a soft spot for the quieter seasons.

There is something about waking up to the first snowfall over Lake Nipissing. Or sitting in the sauna on a cold night. Or watching the sun disappear over the lake when the beach is completely quiet.

Fall and winter ask you to slow down a little.

And sometimes that's the whole point of getting away.
